Every synthesizer has "parameters" that influence the sound and alter how it responds to key presses, holds, and releases. Synth presets (and effects presets) provide instant sound injection where it's needed; sometimes this sound is the RIGHT sound, sometimes it needs some tuning, and occasionally it's just a placeholder that's good enough to preserve your desired sound.
